Because of my Latino roots I have a very marked tendency to use many vibrant colors without fearing to use all together as you see in my horses. A lot of movements and textures are characteristic in both my techniques. I consider that my style is a mixture between surrealistic and the hyper realistic, I love to mix different medias, just as I love mix my techniques in the same painting.

Biography

I was born in Cali, Colombia where I lived until 1996 when I moved to Lexington, KY.  Since 2003 I have been the Art and Spanish Culture teacher at Maxwell Elementary School.  Teaching art is one of my greatest passions, the fact of being surrounded by children has helped me keep my youthful spirit alive. This is reflected in my artwork, full of colors, textures, and fantasy; accentuating my style and techniques, inspired by my Latino roots.

Nature is an important part of my life. In my art, horses are used as muses.  For me, horses represent elegance, freedom, innocence, wildness, and strength, which I love to reflect in my paintings as a way to represent my feelings and my thoughts. I consider my style as a combination of realism and surrealism being influenced by artists such as Picasso, Dali, Mamani – Mamani, and Miro.

Artist Statement

I am simple but complicated. My simplicity goes on the outside but inside there are different feelings, thoughts, and concepts of life that intertwine, which I use as inspiration in my work. I use colorful backgrounds and horses as my interpretation of human feelings, situations, and personalities. Colors fluctuate between warm, neutral, and cold, seeking to express all the different situations that I want to capture. The variety of strong colors in my paintings also shows my Latino roots and my strong personality. Although I have my feet firmly on the ground, I believe in the magic and fantasy of our lives, and through painting I can escape from reality and immerse myself in dreams and tales, keeping that girl that I carry inside alive. This is why I combine realism and surrealism in my work. I love capturing the majesty, freedom, strength, nobility, and verve of horses, portraying the feelings and personalities of the human being. I use accentuating colors in the clouds and landscapes to represent situations, personalities, and feelings. I like to work in acrylic and recycled acrylic from other paintings, but I also seek to use mixed media and other recyclable materials as much as my work allows me. When horses are not my muse, then I focus on expressing everything I want through colors and shapes.
